Four zebras escaped from a trailer on a highway exit in Washington State on Sunday, leading dozens of residents, police officers and volunteers to join in an effort to corral them. Among them was a person with particular expertise in wrangling loose animals: David Danton, of Mount Vernon, Wash., who worked for nearly 15 years as a rodeo clown and rodeo bullfighter. He and his wife, Julie Danton, had been driving home from a cattle drive in eastern Washington when they stopped to help the police and neighbors capture the zebras in North Bend, Wash., about 30 miles east of Seattle. “It was kind of divine intervention — we happened to be in the exact spot and had the knowledge,” Ms. Danton said.

She wasn't going to do anything with the land, so she said I could have it. I can think of seven friends in my age range who've bought off-grid land or purchased sprinter vans or RVs. Nacua’s jersey has been placed in football’s shrine to all things great and good because of the historic beginning to his rookie NFL season. An already high-ceiling group, which included Cooper Kupp – the NFL’s receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns leader in 2021 – was searching for additional explosiveness. It couldn’t be any better,” Nacau told reporters after the Rams’ Week 1 victory in Seattle against the Seahawks. Over the next five weeks of the season, Nacua compiled 326 receiving yards off 25 catches and a touchdown. Nacua has 293 more receiving yards than the next rookie in the league, Jordan Addison.

Why IPAs are about to get more expensive

New research predicts the yield of already high-demand aroma hops to drop between 4% and 18% by 2050. This is important for the beer industry because the ever-popular India Pale Ales (IPAs) and their related off-shoots depend on aroma hops for their unique scents and bitter taste. AdvertisementAdvertisementHowever, the high-quality hops needed for IPAs to achieve their desired bitterness and aromas are already more expensive, so these beers are typically more costly than traditional styles. As the climate changes, areas that were once home to hops production become less hospitable, but new areas could open up. The authors concluded by calling on "urgent adaptation measures to stabilize international market chains," noting that these changes "will affect the economics and prospects" for European hop production.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal regulators have approved the expansion of a natural gas pipeline in the Pacific Northwest over the protest of environmental groups and top officials in West Coast states. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave it the green light in a vote on Thursday. The pipeline belongs to TC Energy of Calgary, Canada — the same company behind the now-abandoned Keystone XL crude oil pipeline. The agency’s final environmental assessment revised that number downward by roughly half in calculations contested by environmental groups. Parts of the East Coast, particularly the Mid-Atlantic, may get more snow than normal because of that, he said. That means more rain in the South and extra storminess in the late winter, Gottschalk said. El Nino often means “unusual severe weather across the state of Florida because of a strong subtropical jet stream,” he said. He pointed to Washington’s paralyzing 2010 Snowmageddon storm that dumped more than 2 feet on the capital region during an El Nino. The Siberian snow cover, El Nino and other factors “indicate an overall mild winter,” he told The Associated Press.

The White House calls clean hydrogen “essential to achieving the president’s vision of a strong clean energy economy" and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 2050. Some environmentalists call hydrogen a false solution because it frequently relies on natural gas or other fossil fuels as feedstocks. Among those selected were the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub, based in West Virginia, and the Philadelphia-based Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub. Other projects selected include the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems in California, which will produce hydrogen from renewable energy and biomass. Big fossil fuel companies, renewable energy developers and researchers in university and government labs are involved, too.

A growing wildfire has prompted evacuations in two eastern Washington State communities as helicopter crews raced to rescue residents “trapped by the fires,” which had rapidly burned more than 3,000 acres in a few hours on Friday, the authorities said. The wildfire, which began around noon and has been named the Gray Fire, caused evacuations in the communities of Medical Lake and Four Lakes, which together have over 5,000 residents. Mayor Terri Cooper of Medical Lake warned residents on Facebook on Friday afternoon that they needed to “get out now” and that transportation to shelters was available. Joe Smillie, a spokesman for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, said by phone on Friday that several structures had been destroyed in Medical Lake by the wildfire, which remained zero percent contained on Friday night and was being pushed by wind gusts of around 35 miles per hour.

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels, when humidity and other factors are considered along with the temperature. Already, the excessive heat has killed three hikers, brutalized workers and caused spikes in ambulance calls and emergency-room visits, as cities caution residents to stay indoors and drink water. As of Tuesday evening, more than 61 million people were under excessive heat warnings or advisories, according to data from the National Weather Service. Forecasters have warned that the relentless heat could continue across much of the South through the weekend. The heat will persist next week, with parts of the Great Lakes, Midwest, Idaho and eastern Washington State expected to be up to 10 degrees above normal, said David Roth, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center of the National Weather Service.

Biden’s Fishy Plan to Breach the Snake River Dams

Wonder Land: Inspired by China and Saudi Arabia, Team Biden's vision for U.S. industrial policy is one in which the government explicitly leads; everyone else follows. Images: AP/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyThe Biden administration is committed to destroying four hydroelectric dams on the Snake River in southeastern Washington state. Given the energy crisis in America—with two-thirds of the U.S. risking electricity outages this summer, including nearly everyone living west of the Mississippi, according to a recent warning from the North American Reliability Corp.—it’s a strange time to remove more than 3,000 megawatts of hourly capacity from the Western Interconnection electrical grid. Still, Mr. Biden announced on March 21 that he is determined to bring “healthy and abundant salmon runs back to the Colorado River system.” He meant the Columbia River, but that error was the least of the problems with his announcement.

Threatened grizzly bears could roam again in the wildest reaches of Washington state. The National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday they have restarted the on-again, off-again process to reintroduce grizzlies to North Cascades National Park. People killed them,” said Jason Ransom, who leads the wildlife program at North Cascades National Park. The National Park Service has scheduled several virtual meetings to discuss the proposal.
